Showing Rougemont Castle. The Cathedral City of Exeter was a religious centre during the Middle Ages into Tudor times. Exeter rebelled against the Norman conquest which led William to march to the South West to hold a siege. He then built Rougemont Castle to strengthen Norman control and properties were then transferred to Norman hands from the Saxon inhabitants.
